The Winter Olympics are great entertainment, but as a leadership aficionado, I can’t help but ask myself what are the traits and behaviors these talented athletes possess that jettison them to the top. Of course they must have the basic talent and skills, but it takes more than that to train and prepare for Gold, Sliver or Bronze. Aside from incredible personal motivation and drive, one of the key traits I see is resilience and perseverance.
Last night I watched the pairs skating / short program. It was fantastic: the spins and the jumps and the amazing synchronicity of the couples. What really fascinated me was how when a skater would fall during the competition, the couple would press on – seemingly unfazed. What a great lesson in focus, attitude and perseverance. It’s that “never give up” attitude that drives people to success – whether it’s business or personal. I think we could all you a little of that.
So what’s your favorite event?
Why do you love it?
And what key leadership traits do you see in your Olympic Super Star?
I’d love to hear your comments!

When I watch the Olympics I’m turned off by the pressure to succeed, the quest for perfection. Yes it’s nice to watch people who are great at what they do but I often wonder about the price we pay for our constant quest for success. Can’t we just be who we are and enjoy what we do? Personally I’m kind of tired of trying to be a success, I’d rather just be real.
Just my 2 cents.
I also love the skating and watching them literally bounce back from a fall. Their focus is not on the mistake, or what they didn’t do. Their focus is on the whole program and the 99% that is magnificent. Definitely a lesson for all of us – to focus on what we want! Beverly
Great point, Beverly! Their focus on the “Big Picture” goal is amazing. And just like in leadership, falling down and making mistakes is normal. That’s where growth and improvement thrive.
I understand your point. Some people thrive on the competition piece and for others, striving for perfection can be draining.
You do raise an important aspect of leadership that is critical. Being real and authentic are key attributes for any leader. These are the traits that build trust and honest communication. Thanks for adding you 2 cents
Very shorts, simple and easy to understand, bet some more comments from your side would be great
